Five Hundred and Forty One Flood Affected Families Receive Non-Food Items in Al Nuhood, West Kordofan

IOM Sudan distributed Non Food Items to 541 flood-affected families in Al Nuhood locality, West Kordofan State. The grant amount for this distribution was US$ 10,401 and is provided by the Rapid Response Fund (RRF), an emergency fund from USAID/OFDA and managed by IOM.

The distribution comes in response to the June-July 2016 rainy season in Sudan and after a multi-agency rapid assessment was held on the 29th July 2016; showing the partial and complete destruction of 541 households due to heavy rains and flooding in Alentifada & Alnaser towns in Al Nuhood.

Consequently, INGO Concern World Wide appealed to IOM’s RRF for funding to distribute NFIs to these families. With the support of USAID/OFDA, the RRF approved funding to Concern World Wide, which had also been involved in the initial assessment, in collaboration with the Government of Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC).

The items, donated by the ES/NFI Sector pipeline included plastic sheets (tarpaulins), which are used to repair or construct temporary, emergency shelters. Other items in the NFI kit include kitchen sets, jerry cans and sleeping mats for immediate use. The kits also include blankets to protect families from the cold in the upcoming winter months.

In the coming days, Concern World Wide will be undertaking a Post-Distribution Monitoring (PDM) exercise seeking feedback from the beneficiaries on the usefulness and appropriateness of the NFI kits. The PDM increases accountability to these beneficiaries as they are given the opportunity to voice their opinions on the support they have received, and their comments will be incorporated in future NFI distributions.

IOM’s Rapid Response Fund continues to focus on supporting the most vulnerable families affected by conflict or natural disasters throughout Sudan. The RRF provides funding in six sectors: 1) Logistics Support and relief commodities; 2) Humanitarian Coordination and Information management; 3) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; 4) Emergency Health; 5) Protection; 6) Shelter and settlements and is available for National and International NGOs.
