Ensuring the adequate protection of human rights of all migrants is at the heart of migration management, and the protection of crisis-affected populations is central to humanitarian action. Through its Migrant Protection and Assistance (MPA) Programme, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) works to realize IOM’s commitment to address the needs, as well as promote and uphold the rights of migrants.
IOM Sudan provides protection and assistance to migrants in vulnerable situations, from victims of human trafficking and migrants at risk of violence, exploitation, or abuse, returning refugees and asylum seekers, unaccompanied and separated migrant children, survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and other vulnerable populations affected by crisis.
IOM provides direct assistance to vulnerable migrants transiting through, stranded, or living in Sudan through its Migrant Resource and Response Centre (MRRC/MRCs) in Khartoum, Gedaref and Kassala. Based on their individual needs, migrants have access to medical assistance and psychosocial counselling, legal aid among other types of assistance. Migrants wishing to return to their places of origin are supported with assisted voluntary return and reintegration. Filling a critical gap, services provided are either directly at the centre, via mobile outreach, or through referral to partners.
Working in partnership with other stakeholders, MPA responds through the following six pillars:
- Direct assistance
- Training and capacity development
- Data, research and learning
- Convening and dialogue
- Advocacy and communications
- Provision of thematic guidance
