30 Legal Practitioners Attend a Workshop on Legal and Policy Frameworks to Combat Human Trafficking and Smuggling in East Sudan

IOM Sudan in collaboration with the Sudanese Bar Association delivered a two-day workshop on 14th and 15th April 2017 in Kassala State, East Sudan. Dr. Abdelsalam Babiker, Associate Professor of Public International Law, Head of the International and Comparative Law Department at the University of Khartoum facilitated the workshop engaging 30 legal practitioners in a thorough contextual and technical discussion on the legal and policy frameworks to combat human trafficking and smuggling of migrants in Sudan.

Participants were predominantly lawyers along with representatives of the State General Prosecution and Police. Current and former special prosecutors on human trafficking and smuggling crimes joined the workshop and the closing session was addressed by Dr. Maj. Gen. Yahya ElHadi Suleiman, Head of the Kassala State Police. IOM and the Bar Association are planning to replicate this workshop in other Eastern Sudan states as part of a broader capacity building program on anti-trafficking and smuggling funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation under the “Enhancing Sudan Technical Capacity in Migration Management” Project.
