Enhancing the Capacity of Midwives in Otash IDP Camp
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Sudan has partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the State Ministry of Health to deliver a capacity building training for 25 community midwives in Otash internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Nyala, South Darfur from 24 May to 7 June 2022.
Community midwives will be able to better provide support for normal and difficult pregnancies in areas with limited access to reproductive health services.
The 15-day training aims to enhance the capacity of community midwives in providing quality community midwifery services to ensure safe deliveries and contribute in reducing the maternal and child mortality in Otash IDP camp. Otash camp was established in 2004, following large-scale displacement as a result of conflict. It currently holds an estimated 121, 000 IDPs.
Upon completion of the training, trained midwives will be provided with medical equipment and supplies, including midwifery kits and supportive supervision and monitoring by UNFPA.
Qualified community midwives remain an important strategic priority to reduce both maternal and child mortality at the community level in Sudan.
Funding for this training is provided by the U.S Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), under the project ‘Multisectoral Humanitarian Assistance for Displaced and Mobile Populations in Sudan’.
