IOM Sudan Showcases the Migrant Resource and Response Centre to the Norwegian Minister of Immigration and Integration
Khartoum – IOM Sudan hosted the visit of H.E. Sylvi Listhaug, the Norwegian Minister of Immigration and Integration, to IOM Migrant Resource and Response Centre (MRRC) in Khartoum. In addition to a briefing on the MRRC, the Minister was introduced to the service flow at the MRRC through a tour around the centre, observed the MRRC team at work, and interacted with the MRRC staff and beneficiaries. The Minister was particularly interested to learn about the coordination between the MRRC and government institutions in the provision of services to migrants; the work of the MRRC outreach and medical teams, as well as the possibilities available for migrants to find employment in Sudan.
The MRRC, established in 2015, provides migrants with access to a range of services in one location. Relying on a community engagement approach, the MRRC provides migrants with information and counselling on risks of irregular migration, medical assistance and psychosocial support, and assisted voluntary return and reintegration (AVRR) from Sudan to countries of origin. IOM Sudan has received continuous support from the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security for over three years facilitating the establishment and continued operation of the MRRC.
During her visit to the MRRC, the Minister was also accompanied by H.E. Bård Hopland, the Ambassador of Norway to Sudan, several representatives from the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister’s visit to Sudan was part of a three country tour of the region, including Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya.
