IOM is committed to enhancing access to basic water and sanitation services through the delivery of life-saving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and basic infrastructure provision to vulnerable communities, the construction and rehabilitation of water points and infrastructure, sanitation facilities, the promotion of behavioral changes towards safe hygiene practices, forming an integrated part of social cohesion and community stabilisation projects.
IOM Sudan promotes durable solutions by providing equitable and improved access to safe water and increased knowledge of safe hygiene and sanitation practices. The interventions include the construction/rehabilitation of water facilities (e.g. upgrading hand pumps into solar powered mini water yards), hygiene and garbage collection campaigns and community trainings to increase the sustainability of the process and future use of the water facilities.
IOM develops and implements these projects by directly involving the community with a focus on strengthening the participation of marginalised groups to enhance the effectiveness of activity outcomes and promote community ownership. Interventions are designed using a gender-sensitive approach and are combined with tailored campaigns and trainings to strengthen community resilience against future environmental shocks.
IOM continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by improving access to water facilities and services. The interventions are delivered coupled with the promotion of handwashing practices including risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) activities and Infection and Prevention Control (IPC) training.
